On the evening of May 18th, Austin audiences were treated to a mesmerizing production by Agni Katha, bringing to life the epic tale of Draupadi, the epitome of grace amidst turmoil. One Happy Place to be on April 6th, was the hAmaro fest. Austin played host to the vibrant and colorful extravaganza of This one-day cultural fiesta, held in celebration of Romani International Day. This festival transformed the Central Market into a lively hub of music, dance, food, and festivities, bringing together the rich tapestry of Romani and Indian cultures alongside the Texan spirit. While dance workshops were conducted by Rajasthani Dancers from Wings School of Art as well as Alla Rada, the jazz music bands got people to dance to their tunes. On the evening of April 5th, the city of Austin was treated to a remarkable convergence of musical cultures at a concert featuring Via Romen and Oliver Rajamani. Set against the backdrop of traditional and innovative Romani music, this one-night event captivated audiences with its vibrant performances and unique fusion of Eastern European, Indian, and Texas Americana influences. Headlining the concert was Via Romen, an ensemble renowned for their fiery blend of Romani music and dance with jazz and Latin rhythms. Via Romen delivered a spellbinding performance that showcased the rich tapestry of Romani heritage intertwined with contemporary musical sensibilities. Complementing Via Romen's electrifying set was the mesmerizing performance of Austin's own Oliver Rajamani, a world Romani artist whose music bridges the gap between diverse cultural traditions. Rajamani's fusion of Gypsy folk from India, European Romani melodies, and Texas Americana created a musical landscape that was both captivating and evocative. With each strum of his guitar and each note sung in Romani and Indian languages, Rajamani transported the audience on a transcendent journey through the intersection of global musical influences. This concert , the brain child of Oliver Rajamani was a tribute to the power of music to unite, inspire, and transcend cultural barriers. Here are a few glimpses of the concert.

The night when sophisticated karaoke (and the likes) equipment were put aside for fun the traditional way. over 150 gathered at The Sarva Dev Mandir to celebrate Lohri, the popular Punjabi festival, the authentic way. Folk songs sung with dholkis inside and 'mungfalli' and 'revarri' around the bon fire as sound of 'Sundar Mundriye' filled the atmosphere with cheerful galore. The bitter cold had little effect on the enthusiasm of Punjabi's who gather from all over New England to celebrate with sponsors family Nipun and Manil Asija. Traditional mandir puja kick started the singing as people started to pour in. The local fun loving and colorful 'singing mandali' sang a mix of Punjabi folk songs that many could relate to and even some folk Bollywood numbers. As more and more people kept joining, the enthusiasm among families kept growing. According to those attending, this was a great medium for children of Punjabi families who are born and brought up here to see the color and vibrance of traditional festivals and stay connected to roots. The warmth created by Mandir volunteers is another very attractive feature of this temple, as some attendees shared with us. They like to visit from far away distances because they feel a sense of belonging and feel at home in this environment. Authentic Punjabi food was served as all families mingled and chatted with each other. In all this was a great way to celebrate Lohri.

Traditionally Lohri marks the beginning of longer days, more sunshine, lots of cheer and joy, fun and frolic, and a celebration of a good harvest. Here's a fun celebration at Shivalaya Temple of Boston where many gathered to celebrate the festival in the traditional way. The crowd included new borns and newly wedded couples who were made to feel extra special by performing auspicious puja as well as by including them in traditional Lohri songs. They celebrated their first Lohri at the temple along with over 300 who dressed up in punjabi clothes and showcased color and festivities. Shivalaya Boston Temple went an extra mile in providing food to all those who attended as well as by giving the lohri special 'moungphali and revari' to all guests. It was in evening of so much fun and gallore. All present were seen singing, laughing and joining in unison in the sounds of 'Sundar mundriye". Here are the video glimpses of the event

Blackstone Valley India Society celebrated Diwali, the 12th consecutive year at Grafton High School on Saturday, Dec.10. Besides the usual cultural show, this year presented two new segments: ramayana, a drama show by kids and the Nach Baliye dance competition. There were a total of 33 acts which included a display of a variety of different Indian cultures including classical dance and singing, folk and Bollywood dance, and “Bhangra! “The Fashion Show” which took place for the second year.
